Plot

Theodore and Foduck are at the Great Ocean Tug and Salvage Company dock when Theodore sees Bluenose the schooner sailing ship sailing past. Theodore is in awe of her. But Foduck isn't interested. He thinks sailing ships are old and is more interested in new things. He's equipped with a new depth sounder and thinks it's useful because it tells him how deep the water is. But Theodore isn't listening. His eyes are fixed on Bluenose.

Later, Theodore is passing Bluenose dock when she says hello to him. He gets startled and makes the water swirl around him. They both laugh at that and talk. But Bluenose feels lonely. Theodore thought she had all kinds of friends. But she tells him that ships don't wanna talk to her and assumes she's different or too old. She tells Theodore that years ago before there were motor ships, there was lots of sailing ships in the Big Harbour. Now she's the only one left. Right away Theodore and Bluenose become friends.

As they head to the middle of the harbour, Theodore asks Bluenose what it was like to sail and can't imagine being able to move without an engine. Bluenose tells him she would rather use her sails and explains you just lean with the wind. Theodore tells her that his friend Foduck thinks old sails are useless. But Bluenose laughs and explains as long as they have sails, you can always get somewhere. Theodore wants to see if he's faster than her and decides to race her. Soon the wind puffs up, and Bluenose passes him. Theodore is stunned. Bluenose guides pass the harbour, then turns around and floats back to Theodore. He's quite impressed to see how fast she is, and she tells him she was once the fastest ship in the ocean.

A few days later, Bluenose is at the repair dock, and Theodore is sent by the Dispatcher tow her back in the water, because he knows they became fast friends. Theodore whistles hello to her, but Bluenose is upset and tells him they had installed a radio on the top of her mast. Theodore tries to cheer her up and says she's like a modern ship now. But she says old ships don't need modern things and that she was sailing in the high seas before radios were invented. Then Theodore sees a red rudder on her and wonders if it's something new as well. But she tells him it's as old as her. She asks him to get her back in the water, and she'll show him how it works.

Once Bluenose is back in the water, she shows Theodore the secret of sailing. She tells him to push her from the side like he was a powerful gust of wind. Theodore does, and instead of moving sideways, Bluenose moves forward. Theodore is quite surprised. Bluenose keeps on sailing and tells him even if the wind blows against her side, her rutter makes her move straight ahead. And she continues to float with Theodore watching in amazement. Then Foduck shows up and is eager to show Theodore he found a green and yellow striped cloth with his new depth sounder at Cobequid Cove and has it laying on his deck. Theodore can see he's excited and he asks Theodore to come along with him, as he's eager to find what else he can find with his new equipment. But Theodore stays as he stares at Bluenose still sailing.

Next time Theodore sees Bluenose, she is quite annoyed with her new radio as it's making lots of static. Now it's Theodore's turn to show her how the radio works. He tells her she doesn't have to turn it up real loud. Only if she's far enough away. So they go in different places and Theodore calls her on his radio. But Bluenose shouts that she hears him. Theodore tells her she doesn't have to shout to be heard. That's what the radio is for. He goes out a little further and he uses his radio again. And Bluenose responds again. Theodore can tell she's got the idea. And this time goes really far so they can't see each other. He goes around Willy's Island and calls to Bluenose, and she answers back. At the same time, Foduck is at the shore enjoying his depth sounder and is counting how deep the water is. Suddenly, he feels a tug from behind, and stops. Seaweed was all around the shallow shore, and it wrapped around his propeller. Now he can't move. Then he sees Theodore coming towards him. Foduck blasts his horn and warns him there's seaweed all around the shore. Theodore can see it and stops. He doesn't know how he can help Foduck. Then he comes up with an idea. He tells him he should sail out with the cloth he found. Foduck isn't sure but gives it a try.

Foduck raises the cloth on his radar mast like a sail, and he floats out of the seaweed thanks to the wind. Foduck can't believe it worked. But he's not out of danger yet. The wind is blowing him to the rocky shore, and without his propeller, he doesn't know how to stop. Theodore quickly radios Bluenose, as she's the fastest sailing ship in the harbour. Bluenose races to the rescue. Foduck is getting closer and closer to the rocky shore. Theodore watches Bluenose float side by side with Foduck and she tells him to turn his sail the other way. He does so, and just in time. The wind pushes Foduck away from the shore. He thanks Bluenose for saving him but wonders how she knew he was in trouble. She tells him Theodore called her on her new radio. Then he asks her if he can show her about sailing the old way. She agrees to, and then asks him if he can show her how to use her new radio. And he agrees to as well. Now they both have an appreciation for things old and new. And Theodore smiles as they float on. He knows they both have something to share with each other. Old and new.
