Theodore Changes Sides is the third episode of the second season.

Plot

During the morning work meeting, The Dispatcher was giving the tugboats their jobs for the day. George and Foduck are to bring in an oil super tanker, and Theodore and Hank are to replace broken marker buoys. Theodore feels disappointed. He wanted the kind of job George and Foduck had. So, he and Hank go around replacing broken buoys. They work together quite a lot and have a special whistle signal together, which doesn't really mean anything. But it's there way of saying 'Hello. I'm happy.'

As the sun begins to set, the tugs head back to the dock. Theodore and Hank talk about how heavy marker buoys are. They also agree that working together and talking about things together makes them a great team. And it's always fun doing them together. As Hank drifts off to sleep, Theodore looks at the other side of the dock where George and Foduck are sleeping. He wishes he has an important job like they do and feel like an important tugboat as well.

The next day when the tugboats finish their jobs and go back to their places, George asks Theodore if he would like to dock beside him. Theodore is stunned to hear this. George is an ocean tug, and he usually docks with Foduck and Emily. And since Theodore is a harbour tug, he usually docks with Hank. But Emily is away on an ocean job, and Theodore is hesitant at first. But George tells him that he has been the tug in charge before. So, he agrees to dock beside George. Hank sees Theodore heading over to the other side of the dock and feels sad. Because they always dock together. Theodore tries to make it sound not that important, and that it's just for the night. Theodore settles into his new place at the dock. And admits it's nicer there. He can even see past Benjamin Bridge. And it makes him feel important being with the other ocean tugs.

Next morning, Theodore is lined up with the George and Foduck, and he gets an important job. He and George are to move Owan the oil rig. Hank has to replace broken marker buoys again. He toots to Theodore with his special whistle signal and will see him later. As George and Theodore move Owan, Theodore is feeling quite happy, getting important jobs since he changed places at the dock. He even toots his special whistle signal with joy. But George never heard it before and assumes it was an emergency whistle. He quickly stops Owan. But he become furious when Theodore tells him it was just for fun as he and Hank do it and tells him to only use the regular whistle signals when they're working. Theodore feels bad and suggests more important tugs don't have special whistle signals because they're happy anyway.

As Theodore and George finish moving Owan, Hank is floating quietly at his place at the dock. Theodore attempts to quietly float towards his new place at the dock. But Hank sees him coming and asks if he's docking with George again. Theodore replies just for tonight since Emily isn't back yet. Then Hank asks if Theodore's still his friend. Theodore says yes, but things are different now. They both stare at each other, knowing things are too different now. As the sun sets, Theodore wanted to talk with George about working together like he and Hank do. But George keeps cutting him off and tells him that super tankers are a lot heavier than oil rigs. And talks louder and louder about it as he revs his engine and builds up smoke. Theodore can't help but to cough. He begins to think being an important tug isn't as much fun as he hoped it would be. So, he slides back to his new place at the dock, and he and Hank sadly say good night to each other. Quietly though.

The next morning, Emily returns and lets the harbour know with a blast of her horn. Theodore is happy about this as he wakes up and realizes he can't dock beside George anymore, trying to show a disappointed face in front of George. But George tells him there's lots of room where he's at, and he can dock beside him forever. Theodore is appalled at what George just said. Docking beside him sounded horrible, and that meant he would never get to dock beside Hank ever again. Both Theodore and Hank stare sadly at each other, missing one another.

As he and George are moving Margaret out of the harbour, Theodore can't help but to think about living on the other side of the dock forever. And that being a more important tug isn't making him feel happy. Then he hears Hank special whistle signal. Hank is replacing another marker buoy, and Theodore sees him. But he doesn't whistle back, because it would anger George again. But even so, it still makes Theodore feel better. As he and George finish moving Margaret out of the harbour, he thinks about being a more important tug, and about his more important place at the dock, and mostly about Hank.

As the sun sets, Theodore goes back to the more important side of the dock and talks to George. Hank thought they were talking about the day's adventure, and he sadly turns to his side of the dock. But then he hears Theodore's special whistle signal and whistles back. Theodore comes back to his old place at the dock, which makes Hank happy. Theodore tells him that he told George that all the tugs are important to him, and Hank agrees to that statement. Theodore slides into his at the old place at the dock beside Hank, and it feels just right to him. They both say good night to each other, and agree it was a nice day. And Theodore believes tomorrow will be even better.
