Dreamworks Classics (formerly known as Classic Media) is the current owner of Theodore Tugboat. The rights to the series were sold to Classic Media after production ended in 2001.
In 2006, Classic Media formed television network Qubo as a joint venture with Ion Entertainment, NBCUniversal, Corus Entertainment and Scholastic Corporation. Theodore Tugboat was added to the network on January 8, 2007 and removed on September 13, 2009. The network ceased operations on February 28, 2021.
In the summer of 2012, Dreamworks Animation bought Classic Media for $155 million dollars. In early 2016, Dreamworks Animation was purchased by NBCUniversal and so their releases have since been distributed by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
Many companies have tried to purchase the rights to get Theodore Tugboat on DVD from Dreamworks Classics, but Dreamworks has refused to sell any rights.
